Writing Coach Promise

This is my personal promise to you:

Writing coach to coaching client—here’s my promise.

As your writing coach, I promise to help you with whatever project you would like help with. I promise to help you write either or both fiction and non-fiction that is compelling and polished. I promise to help you get past writer’s block or anxiety.

As your writing coach, I promise to help you get a clear focus on your project. I’ll help you clarify your writing project’s purpose and goal, and your own purpose and goal in being a writer.

I promise I will always

Respect your writing and you

Support your writing efforts with positive encouragement and honest evaluation

Listen to your needs and concerns

Read your work with an eye toward two goals—helping you say what you want to say in the most clear and entertaining way possible AND helping you create work that editors or agents will want to buy.

Be honest about what works in your writing and what doesn’t—I will never tell you something’s good if it isn’t and I won’t make criticism just for the sake of criticizing.

I promise I will NOT

Simply mark up your writing with a lot of red ink (or red type as the case may be) without explaining WHY I’m making the suggestions I’m making

Tell you only what’s wrong without emphasizing what’s right

Make you feel bad about your writing efforts

I promise that with me as your writing coach, you’ll always feel safe to explore your writing voice and style. I promise you’ll have fun, and I promise that you’ll grow as a writer through our work together.

This is my intention as your writing coach.
